Burgess and Leigh Ltd., Middleport Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Est. 1851. Makers of earthenware. Trade name: "Burleigh" ware.

Feather patterns (c. 1950s)

Burleigh produced various modernist designs in the 50s including vases shaped like cacti (much less common than the items shown below), and vases with red interiors and white exteriors with feathers and other applied patterns (below). Look out also for jugs and handled flower-holders. Here is some information kindly provided by Burgess Dorling & Leigh by email, September 10th 2002: "The cactus design was sculpted by Earnest Bailey. Harold Bennett was the art director responsible for the colours. The 1950's artware was the same design team. Harold Bennett left the Pottery in the early 1960's being replaced by David Copeland."
