Courtier

Virtually unknown to retro collectors, this factory produced some very nice retro patterned Hors-d'œuvre dishes. The pieces are very scarce, and their style suggests a date around the mid 1950s. If you know any more about this factory, please email me.

 

  Hors-d'œuvre dish
With cream glaze and hand painted maritime motifs. Earthenware. Overall crazing, but no damage; pattern undamaged. Backstamp shows a man in 18th costume, and reads "Courtier Company Limited Made in England". Value: £1

Overall crazing but no damage, staining or wear. Value: £1

 

James Green and Nephew Ltd, London

 

Orange water jug
Presumably a pub jug. In bright orange, characteristic of the late sixties and early seventies. Earthenware. Mint condition, appearing unused. With a barely legible backstamp (right) which I have printed at high contrast. Value: £1

 

Broadhurst

James Broadhurst and Sons Ltd., Portland Pottery, Frederick Street, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Est. 1847. Makers of earthenware.

 

Harlem Cup and saucer
The painted details are red in this case, but are also seen in black, green and blue. It dates from the late 1950s. Casey (2001) considers this pattern to be influenced by Midwinter's Zambesi, and states that it was not designed by Kathie Winkle. The scarce Pekin pattern in this range had black crossed-lines imitating Chinese characters. Value: £10

Matador plate and bowl set
With gilded rim. Probably mid 1950s. Hand painted. and with the backstamp "Broadhurst England Matador Hand Enamelled 22KT. Gold". Value: £1-2

Data from 1963: Rye Pottery, Ferry Road, Rye, Sussex. Est. 1793. Makers of earthenware.

 

Small jug
Stamped RYE POTTERY. Common. This was a gift from my friend Sue; she said she bought it in the fifties when people had little money: it was affordable style.

Palissy Pottery, Ltd.

Chancery lane, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. Makers of earthenware. Trade name: "Palissy" ware. (information as of 1955).

 

Kon-Tiki cake stand
Presumably named after the Kon-Tiki expedtion of 1947 by Thor Hyerdahl, who sailed in a balsawood raft from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in the South Pacific. The stand is in mint unused condition and can be unscrewed and dismounted. Gift from Sue.

Two tureens in stitch-type pattern
