Schönwald (Porzellanfabrik Schoenwald, Bavaria; Germany) See the website at http://www.schoenwald.com/ These pieces were designed by Hans Theo Baumann (see the book H. Th. Baumann, design 1950-1990 in the books section). In 1969, he started to make designs for the KAHLA group, which owned the factories of Arzberg, Hutschenreuther and Schönwald, amongst others. Hans Theo Baumann's Berlin design for Rosenthal (1956-57) is one of the influences that led David Queensberry to develop the fine shape for Midwinter. This shape represented a rejection of 1050s organic forms in favour of more regular, cylindrical ones.

Form
711 tableware Pyschedelic/flower power pattern. Body (Form 711) designed by Hans Theo Baumann in 1968. The large set includes tureens, coffee and teapot, sugar bowl, espresso cups and saucers etc. I bought it for a ridiculous 24 euros the set in Utrecht at a fleamarket. The seller had halved the price from 48 because nobody was interested! Amazing for such an attractive and useful set from a known designer. This coffee pot is marked: Schönwald Germany 211 Form + dekor 80063 and with the facsimile signature h. th. baumann. Value: at a guess, I would say £20-40 |

"West Germany" German modern ceramics at their best are among the greatest in the world. However, every country has its naff side. Vast quantities of 'modernist' ceramics, most of them poorly designed and ugly, were produced in Western Germany, presumably for foreign tourists to take home as souvenirs, or for the export market. They are now becoming collectable. I love the zebra piece below - it is incredibly bad, and only cost me 3.50 euros (in 2004).German reunification was formalised in 1990, making the designation 'West Germany' redundant. |

Porzellanfabrik Arzberg (Germany) This factory made some great designs in the 1970s and 80s. Please note that Arzberg is a southern German town with lots of porcelain manufacturers (some no longer operational). The 3000 Sicilia has been made by Porzellanfabrik Arzberg. This is the company commonly called "Arzberg" only. Thanks to Regina for this information.

Vase
1095/17 Fabulous piece this, and one of my favorites. Of course I managed to drop it, while taking out of the saddle bag of my bike. And even though it was in bubble wrap at the time, there is now a small chip on the lower rim. Typical. Value: £7-15 (if mint) |

Kaiser (Germany) Kaiser made a large range of white bisque porcelain vases with unglazed exteriors carrying various embossed patterns. They are common, and my best guess is that they are 1980s. Please email me if you know the dates. See the website at http://www.kaiser-porzellan.com/
