Black matt vase Theme: Flora Keramiek Design collection from the 1980s No backstamp, but with a Flora sticker. Mint condition. Value: £ 2-5 |

Dorothé van Agthoven Handle vase Theme: Flora Keramiek Design collection from the 1980s Designed c. 1984-5. Eight designs from this designer were produced by Flora (see advertising sign, below), one of which ('Discus') is similar to this one but lacks the handle, and has a slightly flared lip to the opening. This is an exceptionally striking, beautiful, and modern vase. The simple form, heavy body and matt glaze remind me of some of the works of Arabia. It has a rather scruffy original sticker, reading: "dorothé van agthoven flora keramiek hardenberg holland" in lower-case letters. The vase is used but undamaged, and has a few dark crazing lines on one side only. Value: £ 25-40 |
Black-brown flared-lip vase Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Matt finish with a few scratches, otherwise mint. Probably 1980s. Value: £ |
Candleholder Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) or plant ring (bloemsteker, in Dutch). Bright orange, with circular stepping inside. Similar to ADCO's flower holders. Value: £ 2 |
Deer tile Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Possibly influenced by the film Bambi (1942), this tile looks to be from the 1960s. There was a matching tile with a similar design but different colouring. Marked with shield backstamp and "handpainted". Pristine condition. Value: £ 10 |
Egg cups Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) In a set of mixed colours. Value: £ 1 (each) |
Eggcup set Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) With original but unmarked tray in mint condition. Two of the cups have small rim chips, the others are mint. Value: £ 10-15 (set) |
Eggcups Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) (of the same type as Eggcup set). The rim has a triangular external profile. These are in mint condition, although the glaze on the pink one is thick and blobby around one of the rim edges. These attractive pieces are becoming more difficult to find. Value: £ 2 (pair) |
Flora Keramiek vase Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Mould no. 944 (a smaller 942 was also produced). Chocolate-coloured, and with stacked disk pattern reminiscent of Robert Welch's Hobart candlestick (see Wood & Metal). In mint condition with only a tiny scratch to the glaze; original label and retailer's sticker. This vase is also seen in white, and comes from a wonderful, and largely uncollected, series of ceramics made, I think, in the 1980s. They are not particularly common, but I love them! Value: I got this in 2004 for a ridiculous 4 euros, but I have seen white ones, with crazing, on sale for 40 euros. Value: £ |
Footed peanut bowls Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Perhaps less common than the non-footed bowls shown above, and possibly earlier? Value: £ 1 (each) |
Patterned dish (c. early 60s) Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Rounded triangular dish (a real fifties and early sixties shape) with a pattern of blue, black and silver-coloured pine trees. No damage, but very slight traces of wear in the centre. The backstamp was very weak so I had to boost the contrast in the photo (right). It shows a crown surmounting a shield and has the words KONINKLIJKE PLATEELBAKKERIJ ZUID-HOLLAND GOUDA. Value: £ |
Peanut bowls Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Quite commonly seen in antiques fairs in The Netherlands. Value: £ 1 (each) |
Peanut set (pindastel) Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Some Dutch people considered it unhygienic for guests to dip their fingers into one peanut bowl; sticky-fingered children were viewed with particular distaste. So each person was given a small bowl, and could refill it from the main bowl (black, here) with a scoop. The scoops were originally ceramic, and are usually damaged or missing. However, I have seen this set more than once with a flat, black plastic scoop. Today, Dutch antique dealers sell these sets for dips or sushi. For another pastel peanut set, see Huizen Value: £ 10-15 (complete set) |
Pink cup and saucer Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) With the shield stamp and the script word 'porcelina'. From a set of six. All pristine except for one cup that has a rim hairline. Value: £ I paid 15 euros for the set in 2003. |
Pink eggcup Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) Mint condition. These came in mixed pastel and sky blue sets on a circular dish with a matching cruet. Difficult to find with all the pieces perfect. Value: £ 1 |
Tall grey-blue mottled vase Theme: Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s) This large vase is presumably 1960s, and has a mottled soft grey exterior and blue mottled interior. The effect resembles Poole twintone ware. With Flora shield backstamp (too weak to photograph). Pristine condition. Value: £ 25-35 |
Advertising pyramid Theme: Gouda, Flora general With a lilac body colour and FLORA KERAMIEK GOUDA-HOLLAND in black on all three sides. No backstamp. Mint condition with some indistinct fine crazing. Value: £ 75 |

Flora Keramiek Design collection from the 1980s
I thank Dorothé van Agthoven (who designed for Flora from 1978-2000) for providing this information. After an exhibition at the gallery Binnen in Amsterdam in 1987, Flora chose 4 artists to produce models for their Design collection (see advertising signs, below). The pieces were not stamped, but carried only a sticker bearing the artist's name. Unfortunately, even the sticker with name was later ommitted by Flora. On some pieces, the sticker has the word Design with no artist's name. The factory made slight changes to some of the original designs, and this was not always appreciated by the designers themselves.
Gouda Flora Pastel, with matt glaze (mid 50s - early 60s)
All items listed here have the shield and crown backstamp and a matt glaze. The glaze may be unevenly applied, and can show metal utensil marks rather easily. Stuart of Gouda Design has kindly provided more information (click here). They are seen fairly regularly at flea markets in Holland.
