Wim Visser Art Pottery (Kunst Keramiek) for Maastricht
Wim Visser produced in earthenware a range of superb freeform, sgraffito and slip-trailed designs for Maastricht from 1954-1956. According to the book Made in Holland (p. 59; see Books), these handpainted pieces were produced in small batches but were not a commercial success. This episode reminds me of the failure of Colin Melbourne's ultra modern designs for Beswick (1956), which were too far ahead of their time to catch on. In my opinion, Visser's pieces for Maastricht are among the finest of all European ceramics from the fifties. Surprisingly, they are little collected at this time and are almost unknown outside The Netherlands. A promotional leaflet produced for this range at the time is entitled: Kunst Keramiek N.V. "de Sphinx" Maastricht - Holland. It depicts the full range in photographs. Included are beakers with spots or lines, a very large vase with elaborate abstract decoration, and bowls and vases with animals, plants and figures. The handpainted numbers and letters on the underside refer to the body and decoration codes, not the decorator. Thus 152/Z/AE is body shape 152, decoration (pattern) AE. I don't know what the middle letter stands for. Please email me if you know.
